Professional photographers, storytellers and wanderers. Husband and wife duo, Matthew and Renee Hahnel are living the dream. Splitting their time between Australia and America, the couple have made a living traversing the globe, snapping envy-inducing photographs. So what is it about Hawaii that keeps luring them back – and why does Hawaii evoke such fond memories?
You travel the world for a living – what makes Hawaii a stand-out destination in your eyes?
Renee: We visited Hawaii for our honeymoon in 2014, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. During that trip we visited Oahu, the Island of Hawaii and Maui and I am stoked to have now visited Kauai during our second trip to Hawaii.
Matthew: The islands offer something for everyone. If you are after a relaxing beach holiday, an adventure packed trip, a family friendly destination, or a chance to sample delicious local produce – Hawaii is the destination for you!
Why is Kauai the perfect holiday destination for couples?
Renee: Kauai is the perfect destination for couples due to its relaxed “vibe”, allowing them to take the time to enjoy each other’s company without the distractions of the hustle and bustle back home.
What is it about the local people that inspires you to return to Hawaii?
Matthew: People from Hawaii are incredibly friendly and respectful. We love that they are so relaxed. They love their state and they want you to enjoy your time there, so they are always happy to give you great tips on things to check out on your stay.
What was the most memorable part of your time in Kauai?
Renee: We absolutely LOVED the helicopter tour of the island. Getting the lay of the land from above really showcased the diversity of the natural beauty on the island.
How does Kauai compare to the other islands you’ve visited in Hawaii?
Matthew: Kauai has such a relaxed nature. There’s less people here, no large cities and no traffic. It’s the perfect island for some R&R. With that said, after you have gotten your share of rest in there’s just so much here to explore.
What are your three absolute, must-dos on Kauai?
Both: The helicopter tour of the island is something you MUST do if you have the opportunity. Other things not to miss are experiencing a sunset at Puu O Kila Lookout, and to also get some delicious shave ice from Jo Jo’s in Waimea while you’re over that side of the island.
What criteria comprise your perfect holiday and why does Hawaii tick all the boxes?
Renee: Our perfect holiday would be to a place that offers incredible natural beauty, hiking opportunities, great food and the opportunity for some relaxation. We chose Hawaii for our honeymoon two years ago because it offered all of these things and more. There are some amazing things on the islands that you just cannot experience many other places in the world.
What are your top tips for capturing a perfect insta-worthy holiday pic?
Matthew: The three most important things in photography are light, composition, and having a good subject. Good light comes in many forms… head out at sunrise or sunset to capture the beautiful sunset colors. An hour or two after sunrise and before sunset also produce great golden light when the sun is shining without it being too harsh. Finding good compositions comes with practice, get out there and take as many images as possible. Your eye will get better, I promise. As for finding a good subject, we often like to put a person into the image to help give scale to the surroundings, and it also helps the viewer to put themselves in the shoes of the subject.
